Wayne Alan Kan - Freelancer
Creative / Art Director / Designer
- Location Baltimore, United States
- Local time 10:30 PM
- Experience 12 years
I'm a cross-platform, multi-media creative with about 12 years of experience in both agency and in-house settings.
Most people would say I'm a creative type who likes to do good work with good people (and when possible) for good causes.
Although I started in traditional design & advertising, I've spent the better part of the last five years in digital design and creative direction. I've stayed as cross-platform as possible, whenever possible. I like being able to take a project from concept to completion, writing up creative strategy one day and being hands-on the next, whether that comes in the form of designing interfaces or directing a video/TV shoot.
To date, I've worked in advertising and marketing, non-profits and the public sector (government), public relations and magazine publication all on the consumer and b2b end. There's no such thing as a boring assignment, just a boring execution and if you're not thinking that way from the start, you'll have a hard time making it to the end.
I'd like to think my expertise lies in brand development and an obsession with typographical design. I've got an affinity for "giving back". If not to a grassroots non-profit then maybe the next generation. I was a regular guest-speaker at public and private universities throughout my home state of Florida and I look forward to the day I get to do it again, wherever that might be.

REALTOR® at KELLER WILLIAMS REALTY
I’ve known Wayne for quite some time and from early in his career I have seen his artistic work and continued to view his advertising/marketing pieces up to recently. Because of his unique style and talent, I asked him to help me with a project and he came through quickly and above my expectations. It is overly obvious that he is a very talented and creative individual. I’m sure that he consistently proves to be a valuable asset to his employers in the advertising and marketing arena. In addition, Wayne’s personal skills are “second to none” as he forges strong friendships with his acquaintances and, I’m sure, with his co-workers, as well. I would not hesitate to recommend Wayne to anyone that is contemplating the joining of ventures with him!
Freelance Voiceover Talent & Sound Designer
I recently had the pleasure of working on a 2-part project with Wayne Kan. In 4 months, we conceptualized and executed 2 web videos, 1 TV :30, and 1 :60 radio. Through every step of pre-production, production, and post, Wayne pushed my role as producer to be increasingly creative and versatile. Throughout the project, Wayne remained true to his vision, delegating tasks to his teammate's individual expertise. He is driven, articulate, and a natural leader. I eagerly look forward to our next collaboration.

Project Manager at McMurry/TMG
Wayne and I worked together for over a year at Ketchum Digital on multiple design projects for a wide variety of clients. Wayne is a very talented art director, who quickly understands a client's needs and objectives, and translates them into highly effective designs, across all media platforms (web, print, display, advertising, etc.). He brings a passion and professionalism to every project, is collaborative and dedicated to producing the highest quality work for his clients.
Art Director at Momentum Worldwide
Wayne was an incredible mentor while I was a student at the University of Central Florida and member of Ad 2 Orlando. I attribute most of my growth as a designer and professional to my mentorship with him. He pushed me to create great work and challenged me to think differently; I am a better designer because of our partnership and collaboration. I would highly recommend Wayne for any and all positions not only for his creative expertise, but also for his talent as a mentor.
Creative Director, agencyTHE, LLC
Wayne was not only enjoyable to talk to, he was professional, clear in what he needed from me and a breeze to work with on any project. I'd recommend Wayne to work with, for, or just hang out in the general vicinity of... :)

Wayne brings a great energy to a shoot that is infectious. He comes to the location with a creative vision clearly outlined but also has the ability to change direction at a moment's notice when the situation warrants. As a photographer, working with an art director who can excel in both cases is a gift. Just as important, however, is his natural ability to help everyone in the room relax and enjoy the day. I would highly recommend Wayne to any colleagues.
Founder at Orlando Bike Tours
I started getting involved in Ad2 early on in my college career when I first worked with Wayne as an Education committee member. The two years we worked together could not have been more rewarding. He dedicated his time to creating posters and banners for the Education efforts. Wayne helped guide me through planning, coordinating, and ultimately executing school visits, meet & greets with local professionals, and encouraging students to submit entries for the Addy Awards. Towards the end of his Orlando career, I was really happy to see how enthused and passionate he was working in Public Services. He's got a lot of great energy, willing to not just teach, but listen, and hope one day we'd get to work together on something again.

Wayne Kan is by far one of the most talented art directors I have had the opportunity to work with in my public relations career. He knows how to walk a client through the strategic design process and work with technical directors when necessary to achieve results. He truly cares about the process and the final product - aiming for success and a design that not only meets the mark, but impacts people. He is truly one-of-a-kind!

Wayne is an expert creative and art director that has repeatedly shown passion in the various non-profit projects we've worked on together. Throughout each project, I've seen his leadership skills firsthand in how he has the ability to keep everyone on task while making sure all the clients needs are being met. I also have worked with Wayne and have seen firsthand his impressive copywriting with each assignment and I look forward to collaborating with him and his array of skills again.
Client Relations and Writing Consultant
I first worked with Wayne on a pro bono piece for a regional non-profit organization. His attention to detail, strength of leadership, spirit of enthusiasm and creative vision far exceeded the scope of the initial project and assisted in winning for our video portion a Gold Addy. Later I hired Wayne for a logo design and some branding work. Again, his ability to discern client need while expertly adding a creative element was impressive. Anyone having the pleasure to hire or collaborate with Wayne will find their project and experience greatly enhanced and enriched.

In the short time that I worked with Wayne, I could easily see his talent for big thinking and great art direction/design. Wayne is an exceptional creative partner who not only develops great concepts, but also helps others' concepts better. On top of that, he's just a real good guy. I look forward to the opportunity to work with him again.
Graphic Designer at Vitamin T
Wayne spent a lot of time mentoring me. He was patient and understanding. This was my first internship in the graphic design field and Wayne taught me more about the creative process in three months than I learned in 2 years of school. He included me in all the steps so I was able to be a part of the entire process, start to finish. I don't think I would be in my current position (as the only graphic designer supporting a staff of 50+) without the guidance of Wayne. Wayne helped jump start my career and I will forever be indebted to him for all that he taught me. I would also be honored to work with him in the future on any project, should the situation present itself.
Theatre Instructor/Elementary School Educator at Excel Academy Public Charter School
As an account management professional, it is not taken lightly when you come across a creative artist such as Wayne. Not only is he incredibly talented but he thinks through the minutia of how to execute the final delivery - down to mechanicals. He can operate in the creative space from soup to nuts, strategy to execution and it was a pleasure working with him. He is easy to work with and asks tough questions to push the work from good to great.

Independent Contractor at Goldblatt Martin Pozen LLP
During my tenure at Ketchum, some individuals stood out for their great qualities and Wayne was one of those people. Developing unique and creative campaigns with government clients can be challenging, however Wayne was able to demonstrate a professional level of balance when proposing new designs and branded materials. Mr. Kan's portfolio is examplary of how one can present complicated deliverables with a 21st century look. Wayne has a great sense of humor and strong work ethic. I heartily recommend Wayne Alan Kan.
Tal Z Woliner

I had the pleasure of working with Wayne on a mutual client. He created the entire look and feel for the public affairs campaign and continuously impressed the coalition and me with his creative, clean and striking designs. He always had great ideas and was very easy to work with. I would love the opportunity to work him again in the future.
Founder and Director at Space Of Her Own, Inc.
I'm the founder and executive director of SOHO–Space of Her Own, Inc., a nonprofit arts and mentoring organization that serves disadvantaged girls in Alexandria, VA. In 2011-2012, Wayne gathered and lead a team of volunteers as the service team chair and creative lead that provided our organization with a pro-bono advertising and marketing campaign that spanned about 9 months. At the time the project started, we had just received nonprofit status, had an operative but ineffective website, inadequate logo, no tagline or marketing tools, no promotional videos, no print materials or business cards. With him in the lead, all of this and more was provided for SOHO. As a volunteer-run, grass roots organization, we lacked both the funds and the skills to take our organization to the next level. He and his team changed all of that. Wayne's leadership was exemplary. He is one of the most talented, creative and professional leaders I have ever known. His communication skills are outstanding, as is his work ethic. Wayne had his highly capable hands and a brilliantly creative brain in every aspect of the campaign. He also empowered others to make their own decisions; I noticed that the majority tended to defer to his judgement. For example, during the promotional video shoot in my home, the production team arrived early and set everything up. When Wayne arrived, he was supportive of all the work that had been done, but suggested they move the camera line toward a different focal point in the room. Later on, when I asked three members of the team what it was like to have worked so hard to get everything set up only to have him show up and change things, their response was that he was "right" and that his suggestion would make for a much better shoot than they had planned. Another thing to add is Wayne's ability to build a team. Eighteen volunteers worked on this campaign, led by him, and he mobilized another dozen or more professionals to volunteer their time throughout the year. He formed bonds with our SOHO mentors and girls, whom he coached and comforted during photo and film shoots. Wayne's creativity, professionalism, type-A personality when it comes to project management, his follow-through, ability to motivate others, his approachability, ability to motivate a team, his commitment and the fact that he is a well-rounded and good man, are among his greatest strengths. Towards the end, he kept sustainability as a major goal, as he and his team trained our SOHO volunteers to maintain our new site, manage our email and analyze web traffic. They also raised $4500 in cash contributions to SOHO with the overall work being valued at well over $200,000. I plan to use Wayne as my creative consultant as long as he'll have me. The man is truly gifted.
Andrea Maurey, PHR
Senior Recruiter at Laureate
I recruited Wayne out of a stack of applicants in 2011 and quickly saw a great fit, not just for the company but for the office environment as well. In his time with Ketchum, I saw him create great work at a Creative Director level that included an ability to build lasting relationships with our teams and clients in an industry that can often prove to be very challenging. His ability to bring humor at times of great stress is a trait not often seen in large agencies but one that I know will continue to serve him well in whatever future endeavors he finds himself in. In short – I would recruit him again in a heartbeat if given the opportunity.
Account Supervisor, Public and Corporate Affairs at Ketchum
Wayne is an incredibly talented designer. He takes an idea and truly wows the client. I have worked with Wayne on a number of design projects during his time at Ketchum and his commitment to the little details are what make him so unique to other designers. He always goes the extra mile and helps bring to life concepts and ideas in ways that makes clients smile.
Comedic and Endearing Actress/Host
I worked with Wayne on a :30 commercial for the non-profit organization, Space of Her Own. His creativity and team brought a very comfortable and enjoyable working environment. As a result, the spot looked great and has won multiple awards! I would absolutely work with Wayne again and look forward to doing so!
Creative Director at BFG Communications
Wayne is very comfortable in both the digital and non-digital space. In fact, first and foremost he is storyteller. He gets that the most effective brands understand that they are telling a story, and at the heart of any good story is a simple and compelling big idea. An idea and story that transcends the channel or medium to connect brand to people and people to brand. Of course he is also a master at his craft with deep and broad understanding of UI/UX, web design, and architecture.
Senior Copywriter at GKV
I got to work with Wayne for only a few months before circumstances out of our control forced us to go our separate ways. But I gotta say, from a writer’s perspective, Wayne’s everything I’d want an interactive art director to be. His eye is sharp. His tastes are cultured. And his creative instincts are always dead-on. But for me, Wayne’s #1 asset is his ability to appreciate and understand the power of the written word and make it soar on the digital page. That’s a rare skill nowadays. He’s not just an art director. He’s a communicator. On top of all that, Wayne’s also a tremendously nice guy who twice bailed me out when my car was in the shop. (Not that that had any influence on my glowing words above. Just saying.)
Associate Creative Director
Wayne is creative and a pleasure to work with. I would work with him again in a second.
